Cologne weather is largely mild, with very little temperature variations between seasons and precipitation almost evenly spread out throughout the year. Situated in the lowlands of North-West Germany on the west bank of the Rhine, blessed with an abundance of breath taking scenes and magnificent architecture, Cologne is one of Germany’s largest cities, it’s weather influenced to a great extend by both the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. Thus Cologne weather is typified by warm summers, mild winters and extreme conditions only rarely punctuating its patterns. January average temperatures are around 1° C, rising to 20° C during July and August, while the average rainfall is around 760 millimetres.

Summer

As mentioned earlier, Cologne weather during the summer season is generally warm, although the heat never reaches uncomfortable proportions. Humidity is high during this time of the year, and the fine weather is often punctuated by rainy spells. Although short lived and often occurring overnight, these sudden bouts of rain make summer in Cologne its wettest season. July and August are by far the warmest months, registering averages of 24°C with July experiencing marginally cooler conditions. Evening temperatures remain roughly unified through out the summer season, with averages hovering around 11°C.  Although weather in Cologne make the city a magnet for tourists during all times of the year, July and August’s temperatures make the most favourable and delightful months to plan your visit.

Autumn

Like the other shoulder season of spring, autumn is Cologne retains a usually mild and temperate weather, distinguished by fewer showers and temperatures of neither extreme hot or cold proportions. However, autumn is also the transitional period between the warmer days of summer and the colder front of winter. By the time November rolls in, temperatures begin their descent towards freezing point conditions. Cologne weather during September remains fine and pleasant, averaging temperature highs of 20°C and lows of 10°C. The closer we get to the emergence of November the lower the temperatures become, finally dipping as low as 2°C. Precipitation levels peak during the month of September, while in October and November rainfall decreases considerably.

Winter

Although Cologne weather can occasionally reach chilling proportions during the winter season, the city’s customary temperature levels make it one of the warmest in Germany. Snow falls only on rare occasions and when it does, it usually melts quite quickly. However, during the winter season Cologne’s skies are often overcast making the city drop bellow average point in regards to the number of hours of sunshine per day, in comparison at least to other German areas.
February is the coldest month of the season, with temperatures registering around -1°C on an average. As a general rule though, average low temperatures hovers around the freezing mark for all three months with highs during the same period remaining around 6°C. February is also the driest month of the year.

Spring

Although it stars on the wrong, with the first days of March remaining rather chilly and temperatures dipping as low as 1°C on average, Cologne weather becomes progressively warmer the further we get into springtime territory. Finally in May weather warms up considerably with daily averages hovering around the 19°C mark, although the prevailing fine weather is often intercepted by occasional sprouts of rainfall.
